Located in foothills of the Sierra Nevada's in the small forestry town of Quincy, the Biomass Boiler Shed houses a wood fueled heating system that provides heat to an adjacent public health building. The shed pays homage to it's forestry surrounding through the usage of innovative wood building material called Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). Rather than utilizing a steel frame for structural support, the walls and roof of the shed are constructed of cross laminated timber, which supports the building simultaneously in bearing, shear and overturn. Essentially supersized sheet's of plywood, CLT provides a simple, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing building structure. It's ease of erection and positive impacts on the environment via carbon sequestration make it a perfect compliment to the wood fueled heating system it houses.
